Unlike many places I’ve visited during my last trip to Japan, Togakushi Shrine is not only beautiful, but also deserted. When I arrived in the afternoon I didn’t come across another soul for the first 500m walking up the forest path. The first snowflakes started tumbling down. The soft sun rays where still visible between the tree trunks. I’ve never been to a place this peaceful, yet magical.

Far from the usual tourist destination, Togakushi Shrine is a true hidden gem. Only a couple hours from Tokyo, this sacred Shinto-Shrine can easily be visited with a day trip.
